Liz Hynes Therapy

Meet Liz...

Liz

Over the past 26 years, both my personal life and my professional development have shaped the way I work as a counsellor. My own family experiences — including disability, loss, addiction, sexuality, neurodiversity, hardship and trauma — have deepened my understanding of the challenges people face and strengthened my commitment to supporting others with empathy and respect.

I offer a calm, confident, and steady presence, creating a safe space where you can explore your experiences and emotions at your own pace. My aim is to help you reconnect with your inner resources, develop emotional regulation, and move toward a more grounded and fulfilling life.

With nearly 30 years’ experience as a counsellor, supervisor, and trainer, I have worked across the NHS, blue light services, and the third sector. I now run a private practice and provide counselling through employee assistance programmes, supporting individuals who access therapy via their workplace. I also teach counselling at a local college, helping to train the next generation of practitioners — work I find deeply meaningful and rewarding.

I hold an MA in the Person‑Centred Approach, a therapeutic model rooted in acceptance, empathic understanding, and congruence. This means I bring genuine engagement, authenticity, and a non‑judgemental attitude to our work together. In addition, I have further training in couples counselling, clinical supervision, trauma‑informed therapy (including EMDR), solution‑focused approaches, and adult education. My practice is now integrative, allowing me to tailor therapy to the unique needs of each individual.

Helping find the best you again

Talking is often enough and is usually a natural starting point, but sometimes the words don’t come, or don’t feel sufficient. For some people, working creatively offers a more powerful way to explore distress and pain. My practice room is a safe, confidential space with a range of resources to support creative expression, should you wish to work in this way.

I offer a safe, confidential space where we can explore what has brought you here through talking or, if you choose, through experiential and creative approaches. I have faced many challenges in my own life and understand how difficult it can be to allow ourselves to be vulnerable — and how rewarding it can be to face those vulnerabilities with someone who can support you in finding strength, personal power, and resilience. My hope is that our work together will help you make meaningful, lasting changes in your life.

“When I work with individuals, I meet you as a unique and whole person who may be finding aspects of life difficult right now — not someone with an issue or label to be fixed.”

Counselling

I believe counselling is at its most effective in person, and this is always my preference and recommendation. However, I understand that this isn’t always possible or preferable for many reasons. I therefore also offer online and telephone counselling, with appointments available seven days a week.

I offer a flexible approach to sessions, including some evening and weekend appointments. I also provide an initial 30‑minute introductory session so you can get a sense of whether you feel comfortable working with me. It’s important that your counsellor feels like a good match and that you feel at ease.

You will decide the frequency of our meetings. In our first session, we will talk about how you wish to work and agree on some boundaries to ensure you feel safe, including how and when we will contact each other.

My practice is based in Warrington.

You choose your preferred session style

I am based in Warrington for face-to-face sessions — these last 50 minutes and most clients have sessions for around 6-8 weeks. Face‑to‑face counselling offers a uniquely grounded experience, where being physically present with me can help people feel more connected, understood, and supported. The shared space often makes it easier to pick up on subtle cues and build a deeper sense of trust, enriching the therapeutic process.

Appointments can take place online when that suits your schedule or circumstances. We’ll agree a time together, and I will contact you then. I simply ask that you’re in a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable to talk openly, allowing you to get the most out of our sessions.

Telephone appointments can be arranged if this is the most convenient option for you. We’ll agree a time together, and I will call you then. I simply ask that you’re in a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable to talk openly, helping you get the most out of our sessions.

One-to-One

I believe that understanding ourselves and the people around us can be the key to lasting change. In one‑to‑one counselling, much of my work focuses on helping clients make sense of their life experiences, the patterns they’ve developed to cope, and how these shape their relationships today.

Couples

I understand that addressing concerns about your relationship can feel daunting, and that one of you may be more ready for this step than the other. I will help you both identify and share your concerns, and support you in feeling heard and understood. Together, we will work on communicating more effectively and building on the strengths within your relationship.
Couples counselling does require commitment and may include some gentle tasks to explore between sessions, such as trust‑building exercises or small changes to your daily routine.

Families/Groups

Family and group counselling offers a supportive space for people to explore how their relationships, communication styles, and shared experiences influence one another. I work with everyone involved to help identify patterns, understand different perspectives, and create healthier ways of relating. These sessions encourage open dialogue, mutual respect, and collaborative problem‑solving, allowing each person to feel heard while working together toward positive change.
Depending on your needs, we may explore small tasks or practices between sessions to strengthen connection and support progress.

"Counselling can help to strengthen a relationship, or sometimes to support couples to move on independently if this is the best option."

Supervision

I offer one‑to‑one and group supervision to both qualified and trainee counsellors, as well as those in related professions. My approach is Person‑Centred/Experiential and collaborative. I aim to offer what I value most in my own supervision: a safe space to celebrate your work and explore challenges in the presence of another. I bring full engagement and transparency to support you in maintaining safe, ethical, and beneficial practice.

EMDR

- Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

What it is...

EMDR is a therapeutic approach that helps people process the impact of past events so that the distress they cause can reduce over time. Difficult experiences can show up in many ways, including flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance, hypervigilance, or feeling overwhelmed. These responses may be triggered by sights, sounds, thoughts, or feelings connected to the original event.

How it works...

EMDR works by helping the brain process and reorganise how difficult memories are stored, so they become less overwhelming and lose their intensity. Over time, many people experience a reduction in the anxiety and stress linked to traumatic events.

Who it's for...

EMDR is an adaptive therapy that can be helpful for many types of trauma and overwhelming experiences. It is often recommended for people living with PTSD, phobias and fears, anxiety, low self‑esteem, and depression.
